Privacy Policy

We take your privacy seriously

EV Drivers Australia is a community of EV drivers — teachers, nurses, tradespeople, and families who went electric. We organise to make sure policies that affect us are shaped by us, not decided without us.

As part of that work, we collect some personal information from people who support our campaigns. This policy explains what we collect, why, and how we handle it.

By visiting our website, signing a petition, or otherwise providing us with your personal information, you consent to your information being collected, held, used, and disclosed as described in this policy.

The legal framework

This policy reflects the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). While EV Drivers Australia is currently a new and small organisation, we have chosen to align with the APPs as a matter of good practice — and in preparation for the removal of the small business exemption on 1 July 2026, at which point the Act will formally apply to us regardless of turnover.

Personal Information means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable — as defined in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

Sensitive Information means information about a person's political opinions, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, health information, and related matters — as defined in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). We handle Sensitive Information with additional care.

What we collect

When you sign a petition or join our supporter list, we collect:

  • First and last name

  • Postcode

  • Email address

  • Optional: why the Electric Car Discount (or another campaign issue) matters to you

We only collect what we need to run our campaigns and communicate with you effectively.

If you contact us directly — by email or via social media — we may keep a record of that correspondence.

Why we collect it

We collect and use your personal information to:

  • Add you to the EV Drivers Australia supporter list and send you updates on our campaigns, actions, and advocacy

  • Understand where our supporters are located — postcode data helps us direct advocacy to relevant electorates and decision-makers

  • Deliver petitions and open letters to their targets, which may include disclosing your first name, last name, and postcode to the relevant government official or minister

  • Measure the reach and effectiveness of our campaigns

  • Respond to messages or requests you send us

We will not use your information for any purpose unrelated to our advocacy work.

Signing a petition: what gets disclosed

When you sign a petition through EV Drivers Australia, your first name, last name, and postcode may be formally disclosed to the target of that petition — for example, a minister or government department — as part of delivering the petition.

Your email address is not disclosed to petition targets.

By signing a petition on our site, you consent to this disclosure.

Your optional comments

If you choose to share why a campaign issue matters to you, that response may reflect your political views or opinions. Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), this is treated as Sensitive Information.

We will only use these comments to inform our campaign communications and public advocacy (for example, anonymised quotes or aggregated sentiment). We will not disclose identifiable comments to third parties without your explicit consent.

Direct marketing and opting out

By providing your email address, you consent to receiving campaign updates, calls to action, and advocacy communications from EV Drivers Australia.

You can unsubscribe at any time by:

  • Clicking the unsubscribe link in any email we send, or

  • Emailing us at [privacy@evdriversaustralia.org.au]

We will process unsubscribe requests promptly.

Third-party services and overseas transfers

We may use some third-party services to operate our website, manage our supporter list, and send campaign emails. Some of these services are operated by companies based in the United States, which means your personal information may be transferred to and held in the US.

Services we currently use include:

  • Squarespace — our website platform, which processes site usage data and may use cookies and analytics

  • Nationbuilder — used to manage our supporter list and send campaign emails

We take reasonable steps to ensure these providers handle your personal information in a manner consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles or an equivalent standard.

As our organisation grows, we may migrate to additional platforms. We will update this policy if those changes affect how your information is handled.

Cookies and analytics

Our website uses cookies and analytics tools to understand how visitors use the site. This may include general data such as your location (city level), device type, browser, and pages visited. No personally identifiable information is collected through site analytics alone.

You can disable cookies in your browser settings at any time. Note that some features of the site may not function correctly if cookies are disabled.

How we keep your information safe

We take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure. Our supporter data is held in secure, access-controlled platforms with industry-standard protections.

Access to supporter data is limited to authorised EV Drivers Australia staff and volunteers. Anyone with access is bound by confidentiality obligations.

If we become aware of a data breach that is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) in accordance with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you

  • Correct information you believe is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, or misleading

  • Request deletion of your personal information from our records

To make any of these requests, email us at [privacy@evdriversaustralia.org.au], including your name and the email address you used to sign up. We'll ask you to verify your identity and aim to respond within 28 days.

In some cases, we may need to decline a request — for example, where compliance would be unlawful or would infringe another person's privacy. Where we do, we'll explain why in writing.

If we decline to correct your personal information and you ask us to, we will take reasonable steps to note your view that the information is inaccurate alongside the record.

Making a complaint

If you have a concern about how we've handled your personal information, please contact us in the first instance. We'll work to address it within 28 days.

If you're not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC):

Updates to this policy

We'll review and update this policy as our organisation and activities evolve — particularly as Australia's privacy laws continue to change (including reforms expected in 2026 and beyond). We'll notify supporters of material changes by email.

EV Drivers Australia is a campaign organisation. This policy does not constitute legal advice. If you have specific legal questions about your privacy rights, we encourage you to seek independent advice or contact the OAIC.

A campaign by EV Drivers Australia

EV Drivers Australia is made up of teachers, nurses, tradespeople, and families who went electric.

There are 450,000+ Australians like us who drive electric. We made the smart choice for families, our wallets, and the long term. Now we're organising to make sure the policies that affect us are shaped by us, not decided without us.

When governments make decisions about EV taxes, charging, and affordability, we should be in the room.
